Stress Management Strategies of Chinese International Students in South Korea: A Qualitative Analysis

Abstract
In the era of globalization, acculturative stress and stress management of international students have become key issues for their importance to both sojourning students and the stakeholders. This study aims to investigate Chinese international students¡¯ stress management strategies in Korean universities, examining how stress management is conducted individually and organizationally. The sample consists of 24 Chinese international students, with 12 males and 12 females, from the universities of 6 cities in South Korea. The results indicated that communicating with parents or friends online was the most frequently used stress coping strategy at the individual level, and organizational support and service and social support were the most prominent strategies at the organizational level. The results have important research and practical implications. It makes contribution to the body of the knowledge of acculturative stress management of Chinese students in South Korea; meanwhile, it provides the reference for both relevant Korean university staff and Chinese international students in facilitating stress management and cross-cultural adaption in South Korea. It is suggested that culturally sensitive support should be provided and stress management programs should be developed for Chinese international students in South Korea.
